Mikala James is the founder of Loom towels, based in Melbourne.
During a trip to Turkey, in 2011, Mikala met some locals who were beginning to find, support and sustain the few small-scale communities still practicing traditional hand-looming. Once home, Mikala began Loom Towels with the idea to create the highest quality, natural towels that are made in a way that supports communities, sustains traditional craftsmanship and does not harm the environment. Mikala travels to Turkey to design each limited edition range.
Loom Towels prides itself on reconnecting consumers with the natural world through simplistic, sophisticated designs and organic fibres. Every material used is organic, all practices are sustainable and all designs are original. Their towels are made using 100 percent GOTS certified organic cotton and dyes, benefitting the environment, creating unique colours and giving a beautiful softness against your skin. All towels are textural; the intricate double-loop weave lends extra absorbency and plushness.
"Our philosophy is quality over quantity. The way we work means no mass production; therefore each range is made in limited editions of no more than 100 pieces, in our unique designs. All of our towels are made sustainably and ethically in a small Turkish community. They are slowly woven by hand on old shuttle-looms, keeping with traditional methods, which helps sustain the community. There is absolutely no factory involvement. " says Mikala.
